Traveling with Children

Obrigado! Diogo, Abigail e Lucas

Diogo - 2017 Out

Diogo - 2018 Jan

A melhor casa de férias onde alguma vez estive. Os pormenores são deliciosos. A Rita e o Simão são igualmente fantásticos.

Rui - 2018 Nov

Ivan - 2019 Nov

Rita and Simão are dedicated hosts, always available to make your stay in their house the best possible. The house is located in the countryside. The environment is very relaxing with cows, rosters, cats,... surrounding the house. A little haven of peace. All of that make this place fit whether for a couple, whether for a family.

Enkel lovende woorden over ons verblijf. We komen hier graag terug!

We had an exemplary stay here and I couldn't say enough about how kind and responsive the host, Rita, was throughout our stay. She communicated early with superb recommendations and I highly suggest you take her restaurant tips -- they served us extremely well. She also had stocked the home perfectly with water and other necessities. The home was as advertised and extremely comfortable for a family of 4 (2 young kids). You can see Monte Brasil from the front porch but are still far enough away from Angra that you can achieve some peace and quiet. The view from the ocean on the porch is sublime. Highly recommend!

Terceira Island

Terceira is one of the nine islands of the Azores, part of the so-called "Central Group". Originally called the Island of Nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo das Terceiras, it was once the administrative centre of the Terceiras Islands, as the Azores archipelago was called.

Suggested itinerary

Cidade Património Mundial da Unesco Angra do Heroísmo - Jardim de Angra

This garden, known for its beauty, features a wide variety of plant specimens. It provides a pleasant stroll. Stop at the vegetarian café/restaurant for a meal or simply drink a cup of organic coffee and enjoy the sounds of nature. Inside the garden, there is a climb to Alto da Memória, where you will have a panoramic view over Angra do Heroísmo. [photo: Antero Ávila]

Cidade Património Mundial da Unesco Angra do Heroísmo - Basilio Simões

A century-old grocery store that has maintained the same characteristics since it was founded in 1860. Visiting this place is like travelling back in time, you can smell the spices and buy various products in bulk.

Miradouro da Serra do Cume

This is the most famous viewpoint of the island, where it is possible to see the impressive patchwork quilt of fields so typical of the Azores. The immensity of the green pastures divided by stone walls, the cows grazing and the sea in the background make this place a must-see. [Photo: Filipe Bem]

Biscoitos e as suas piscinas naturais e Museu do Vinho

Parish with typical bathing sites, with access to natural swimming pools and direct entrance to the sea, marked by the black rocks resulting from volcanic eruptions. You can observe and visit, through walking trails, the whole protected area of the vineyards. There is a children's playground near the main bathing site and it is possible to buy regional products (food and handicraft) in the stalls next to the entrance. It is also possible to visit the wine museum, to understand a little bit better the history of the local vineyards and, at the end, taste and/or buy the various wine products that the Brum family has to offer. Biscoitos is, in our opinion, a must-see.

Farol das Contendas

The Farol das Contendas (lighthouse), built at an altitude of 54 metres, was established in 1934 and is 13 metres high. It was equipped with a lenticular, catadioptric revolving device of 3rd order, the light source being incandescence by petroleum vapour, the reserve being a five-turret constant level lamp. Currently this lighthouse is automated with the DF model system. It can be visited on Wednesdays [Photo: Filipe Bem]

Lagoa das Patas

Lagoa das Patas is a small lagoon surrounded by cryptomeria forests. A wide variety of endemic flora can be observed in the stream.

It is a very pleasant area for short walks and picnics. It also has a small children's playground [Photo: Antero Ávila]

Miradouro da Serra de Santa Bárbara

In the middle of the nature reserve, you can appreciate a large part of the Terceira Natural Park, as well as the pristine natural landscape of the cloud forest of the Azores, one of the rarest and most valuable plant formations, dominated by the endemic Azorean dome cedar (Juniperus Brevifolia). This natural reserve occupies 1863.40 ha of the Santa Bárbara mountain range and includes the island's highest point, situated at an altitude of 1021 m. You can also see a large part of the island, as well as other islands of the central group.

Cidade Património Mundial da Unesco Angra do Heroísmo - Memória

A World Heritage City, it was a mandatory stopover for the African and Indian fleets in the 15th and 16th centuries. It offers an exciting journey through the streets, the monuments and the walls built by the Spaniards on Monte Brasil. In Alto da Memória, at the top of the Jardim Duque da Terceira, you can see the Outeiro da Memória. It was built in homage to Pedro IV of Portugal’s visit to Terceira, and has a panoramic view of the city.

Impérios Espirito Santo

The Impérios do Divino Espírito Santo are an important feature of the Island. Its buildings have a typical architecture, with variations in the different parishes and islands. The existence of the Brotherhood of Espírito Santo (Holy Spirit) in the Azores was widespread in the 16th century. [Photos: Luís Dias]

Furnas de Enxofre

A place not to be missed. It has a circular route where it is possible to observe the volcanic phenomenon of the fumaroles. The surrounding nature amplifies the experience. The circuit through the fumaroles and the north slope area was adapted to the existing paths and complemented with easy access. Along the route there is a set of information panels that support the interpretation of the natural elements present.

Algar do Carvão

An unforgettable visit to the interior of a volcano. Algar do Carvão is the result of volcanic eruptions. The basaltic lava that escaped formed the current chimney, the magma that descended into the ducts and the magma chamber originated the Algar. You can walk around inside it and you can observe and experience the volcanic environment.

Gruta do Natal

Visit the Gruta do Natal and have an adventure equipped with an helmet and a torch! Located in the Altares parish, it is a very extensive geological formation, resulting from the formation of a lava tube in the interior of the Island, comprised in the Natural Forest Reserve of Serra de Santa Bárbara and Mistérios Negros.

Monte brasil

The Monte Brasil nature reserve had its origin in an ancient extinct volcano with origin in the sea and that later joined the island. The Castle of S. João Baptista was built here and used as a fortress. It was also part of the network of coastal lookouts for whale hunting. Nowadays, it has viewpoints with panoramic views over the ocean, which are also used for cetacean watching. Monte Brasil is now a perfect area for short walks in the nature with viewpoints overlooking the city and the sea. It has an approved circular walking trail lasting approximately three hours. It has very pleasant picnic areas and children's playgrounds. It is possible to observe deers walking freely and sometimes approaching humans with curiosity.

Viveiros da Falca

The Falca forest nurseries are a production site for the Japanese red cedar. This tree is part of the island's landscape and is commonly used to protect the pastures from the wind. The forest has areas for outdoor activities and offers tranquillity and close contact with nature. Not a very touristic area, is often used by locals for picnics and walks. You can complete a walking trail near the stream or walk along the road that surrounds the park and has a view to the ocean and the patchwork of fields on the island. The surroundings of nature with the tranquility of the countryside make this short walk unforgettable.
